Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) Related Services (EnerGuide Program)

1. Basic Service:

The Basic Service is delivered by a NRCan Certified Energy Advisor (EA) and is described as follows:
  • A foundational service of Natural Resource Canada's Energuide Rating System (ERS) to understand the energy efficiency of your home.  The EA performs a full on-site home energy evaluation to collect all required data to model the house in HOT2000 software.  The homeowner receives an EnerGuide Rating, EnerGuide Label and Homeowner Information Sheet detailing the results of the evaluation.
  • NEW OR EXISTING HOUSE SERVICE?   New and/or Existing
  • FOR HOMEOWNER OR BUILDER?  Homeowner and/or Builder
  • A Basic Service includes an on-site energy evaluation of the house and energy modelling of the house (with approved software).
  • An air tightness test (with blower door equipment) to show the amount and location of leakage (energy loss) areas.
  • Generation of an EnerGuide Rating and Label for the home to show its energy efficiency. The label includes:
    • EnerGuide Rating (estimated amount of energy used by the home, measured in GJ*/year). This is based on standard operating conditions so it can be compared to other typical homes.
    • Rated Energy Intensity (amount of energy your home uses per square footage).
    • Rated Greenhouse Gas Emissions of the house.  This shows the annual GHG produced by the operation of your home and its mechanical systems. Note: In a world where carbon taxation is increasing, it will be important to make your home energy efficient for long term resale value.
    • A support document entitled, Guide to the EnerGuide Label for Homes.
  • Basic Service Cost:  Competitive local market rates. Loyalty discounts available for Builders with ongoing needs.  Please call for rates.
  • Rebates available?  Yes - up to $300 from CleanBC and possibly other regional incentives (see Rebates and Incentives page for more information).

2. Renovation Upgrade Service:

The Renovation Upgrade Service is delivered by a NRCan Certified Energy Advisor (EA) and is described as follows:
  • A key service of Natural Resource Canada's Energuide Rating System (ERS).  This service is delivered as an optional additional service to the Basic Service.  The EA and the homeowner discuss potential feasible renovation upgrade options.  The EA then models upgrade recommendations and generates a Renovation Upgrade Report (RUR) to help prioritize specific renovation options. The report is a useful tool to help determine which upgrades offer the greatest energy efficiency gains.
  • NEW OR EXISTING HOUSE SERVICE?   Existing
  • FOR HOMEOWNER OR BUILDER?  Homeowner
  • The energy advisor serves as a consultant to a homeowner and assists with renovations that can reduce energy consumption (Rated Energy Intensity) and related costs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions (Rated Greenhouse Gas Emissions).  Potential energy and GHG savings are shown in relation to the current house, as well as a typical new house built to current energy efficiency requirements (see graphic).
  • Renovation upgrade recommendations aim to improve occupant health and comfort, and durability of the home.
  • Upgrade recommendations are calculated using standard operating conditions and, when available, household operating conditions.
  • Note: This service is essentially an office-based house modelling task and does not require any further site visit beyond the Basic Service site visit.
  • Cost:  Competitive local market rates. Loyalty discounts available for Builders with ongoing needs.  Please call for rates.
  • Rebates available?  Yes - up to $300 from CleanBC and possibly other regional incentives (see Rebates and Incentives page for more information).

3. Construction Upgrade Service for New Homes:

The Construction Upgrade Service is delivered by a NRCan Certified Energy Advisor (EA) and is described as follows:
  • An additional service of Natural Resource Canada's Energuide Rating System (ERS).  The EA assists builders in the development of upgrade packages as they compare the energy efficiency level of a planned house with various upgrades that improve the planned house’s energy performance prior to construction. This is typically offered as a stand-alone service, though the Construction Blower Door Service and the Basic Service can be undertaken on the house at a later date (during and after the house is built, respectively).
  • NEW OR EXISTING HOUSE SERVICE?   Existing
  • FOR HOMEOWNER OR BUILDER?  Homeowner
  • A Basic Service includes an on-site energy evaluation of the house.
  • Energy modelling of the house (with approved software).
  • An air tightness test (with blower door equipment) to show the amount and location of leakage (energy loss) areas.
  • Generation of an EnerGuide Rating for the home to show its energy efficiency.
  • Rated Energy Intensity (amount of energy your home uses per square footage). This is a standard so it can be compared to other typical homes.
  • Rated Greenhouse Gas Emissions of the house.  This showns the annual GHG produced by the oepration of your home and its mechanical systems. In a world where carbon taxation is increasing, you will thus be important to make your home energy efficient for long term resale value.
  • Note: While this service will typically be applied to a proposed new house in the design stage, it may also be performed on an existing house where the homeowner does not want the Basic Service but would like to investigate ways to improve their home’s efficiency.
  • Cost:  Competitive local market rates. Loyalty discounts available for Builders with ongoing needs.  Please call for rates.
  • Rebates available?  Yes - up to $300 from CleanBC and possibly other regional incentives (see Rebates and Incentives page for more information).
